Teaching Study Skills
Teachers and children today have a great need for learning about study skills. With rapidly expanding curriculums and mounting pressure on students to compete for higher grades, teaching study skills to students is imperative in order to reduce the burden on them as well as to prevent them from feeling frustrated and defeated.
Using effective study skills helps students develop good study habits, a positive attitude about studies and helps them realize that studying does not have to be dreaded. The methods that are taught as part of the study skills curriculum are not only handy for students but these can be used almost all through adult life as well.
This is why it is mandatory in many Western countries for teachers to learn how to teach study skills and teachers may even have to sit for study skills tests. But the task of teaching study skills to students is also partly the job of parents. Students need to work jointly with their parents and teachers to devise a learning system that best suits them.
The basic purpose of teaching such skills is to make the task of doing homework seem less taxing and more about empowering oneself with information. In addition, study skills helps children build self-esteem and learn to view their studies as a positive experience rather than drudgery. Effective use of study skills will undoubtedly translate into healthy work habits even later on in life and this is something that parents need to understand.
